Jim Patrick grew up in Los Angeles, and went off to Yale to study English. Returning home, he worked as a writer for several years, most notably co-authoring the memoirs of John Harkrider, designer of elaborate musical extravaganzas for Broadway legend Florenz Ziegfeld, Sam Goldwyn, Louis Mayer and others, from the Silent Era to Roaring 20’s Broadway, and through Hollywood’s Golden Era. Jim discovered Nantucket in 1978 while traveling, and returned for good three years later.  Jim is also the founding artistic director of the Nantucket Short Play Festival and Competition.

EveryChild (2009-Musical)  Produced at Edinburgh Fringe Festival (Scotland); Cinema Paradiso and Pine Crest School, (Ft. Lauderdale). Musical adaptation of medieval classic  Everyman created for American High School Theatre Festival. Led student/faculty team which created original script, music, and choreography. Produced and directed show.

Perfect Children (2006-Musical) Produced at Edinburgh Fringe Festival(Scotland); Cinema Paradiso and Pine Crest School, (Ft. Lauderdale). Original production created for American High School Theatre Festival. Led student/faculty team which created original script, music, choreography.  Produced and directed show.
High Tied at the Point Breeze (2002-comedy) Nantucket, MA. Dinner Theatre murder mystery spoof on corporate greed, ran weekly during summer.
He Meant / She Meant (1998- comedy) Waterfront Theatre Ensemble, Flatiron Theatre, NY and Nantucket Short Play Festival. Based on Warner Book by Jenny Lyn Bader and Bill Brazell.
Things No One Notices (1994-drama) and The Playground  (1992-drama) both among winners of R. Joyce Whitley Festival of New Works, Karamu House, Cleveland, OH, the nation’s oldest black community theatre.
A Thousand Men in Arms (1988 Musical-unproduced) The story of the Massachusetts 54th regiment, the first Northern black troops mustered in the Civil War. Written at the request of Fran Cohen, then President of the Lincoln Theatre Foundation, Washington, D.C. as potential opening piece.
Founder and Artistic Director (1992-Present), the Nantucket Short Play Competition and Festival.  Listed in all major sourcebooks. Produces staged readings or full productions of 6-12 original works per year.  Have produced, directed, or assisted in development of over 100 new works; maintain ongoing relationships with dozens of rising playwrights nationwide.
Director of Drama, Pine Crest School, Ft. Lauderdale, FL. (2004-2011) Taught various theatre courses; started International Thespian Society troupe; started Drama Club; applied for and led two student-written productions to Edinburgh Fringe Festival through American High School Theatre Festival.
H.S. Musicals Directed:  The Secret Garden (2008); All Shook Up (2009); Babes in Arms (2010); Anything Goes (2011)
H.S. Plays Directed (2004-2010): The Laramie Project (2006); A Midsummer Night’s Dream (2009; and numerous original short plays with the playwright in attendance, including several world-premieres, from the Nantucket Short Play Festival. Two of these, Stardust by Joanne Koch, and The Urloined Letter by Todd Wallinger were subsequently published with Pine Crest and the cast receiving original production credit.
1974-1982   Location and casting scout, L.A. area. Extensive location and casting experience. Photography, contracts, and location management, as well as publicity. Worked directly with directors, photographers, ad agency and client art directors on numerous national and  international campaigns.
Ziegfeld, Goldwyn, Mayer … and I  (1981 book and screenplay, unpublished) Autobiography of John Harkrider, Florenz Ziegfeld’s costume designer and Hollywood art director, 1920s-1940s. Credited co-author and chief of 4-person writing staff for this and other projects, 1974-1982.
1981-2001: Seasonal tennis pro, Nantucket, MA. Head Pro, Sea Cliff Tennis Club, 1981-1985; Head Pro Nantucket Tennis Club 1986-1991; 1992-2001: Brant Point Racquet Club (Nantucket); Gasparilla Inn (Boca Grande, FL); and private clients. Also tournament director Nantucket Open (charity tournament) 1978-2003.
